European Football Championship: Have You Noticed Portugal’s Shirts?

Portugal’s flag. No Cross in sight.

The Portuguese flag has no cross.

It really hasn’t. Well of course the escutcheons could be interpreted as in the form of a cross; but I’d say it takes some fantasy, and the will to see a cross, to do so.

But if you look at the shirt of the Portuguese team (as I write waiting for their extra time against Spain), it seems evident  what they have on their shirts is… a huge cross.

Perhaps it is in the ensign of the local football federation. Kudos to them anyway.

Nowadays, it takes balls to even suggest a shirt like that.

  1. Do you have a pic of their shirt?

  2. I’m a Portuguese reader of your blog, and I’m glad to see that our shirts caught your eye. You may be interested to know that the emblem of the Portuguese Football Federation does retain the “Cruz de Cristo”, i.e., the Cross of the Military Order of Christ, which was the de facto successor of the Knights Templar in Portugal. So our players wear that on their shirts too (although it’s quite small, and so difficult to spot during matches). The ‘Cruz de Cristo’ was the cross that the Portuguese carried over the ocean in their caravels in the period of the discoveries, painted on their sails. The first Mass celebrated in the South Americas (April 22 1500) was said under this banner.

    • Thank you so much, Miguel! I was then right in my supposition this had to do with the football federation! The cross I saw yesterday was very big, though…

  3. Hi M.,

It’s the 4th of July here in the states, so I am catching up on a backlog of your posts. I was almost afraid to open it, thinking perhaps their shirts had the Rainbow Coalition emblem, or some such thing. Praise the Lord, I was wrong!

Made a cross-country car trip last week to attend a funeral. It was a Catholic funeral at which Amazing Grace (beautiful, but heretical and Protestant) was sung. In addition, since the deceased loved the Beatles, the priest allowed the playing and singing of “In My Life” (I’ve loved them so…) before the final blessing. Sigh!

My son, now 17, shared the driving. Prius got 50mpg which delighted me. We drove 1100 miles last Saturday part of which was through Nebraska with temperature of 102 degrees Fahrenheit. Only on the great plains in July!

By the grace of God we are home safe. The hillsides are ablaze just south of us, but not nearly as bad as Colorado.

    • I absolutely love “Amazing Grace”. We had some discussion on this blog some time ago about it, if I remember correctly…

I am sad to hear you have a Prius. It takes all sorts, I suppose.. ;) .

As to the priest, this is another living adv for the SSPX, I think…

  4. Of course I’d rather be driving a Mazarati, but can’t afford it.

    • Ah, this would open a long discussion about the alternatives to a Prius, withotu having to buy a Maserati…. but I am afraid it would consume the next three hours of my existence… ;)
