Cardinals Dolan And Wuerl About Obama’s “Outing”

Cardinal Dolan:

President Obama’s comments today in support of the redefinition of marriage are deeply saddening. As I stated in my public letter to the President on September 20, 2011, the Catholic Bishops stand ready to affirm every positive measure taken by the President and the Administration to strengthen marriage and the family. However, we cannot be silent in the face of words or actions that would undermine the institution of marriage, the very cornerstone of our society. The people of this country, especially our children, deserve better. Unfortunately, President Obama’s words today are not surprising since they follow upon various actions already taken by his Administration that erode or ignore the unique meaning of marriage. I pray for the President every day, and will continue to pray that he and his Administration act justly to uphold and protect marriage as the union of one man and one woman. May we all work to promote and protect marriage and by so doing serve the true good of all persons.

Cardinal Wuerl

  1. Mundabor,

I can’t help but feel there is an dramatic inconsistency in Church teaching with issues like this. On the one hand, the Vatican has through active diplomacy after VII, dismantled the very idea of the Catholic state. Yet She wants the lay to uphold some, but not all Catholic values in positive law because She does not want to be seen as imposing the Faith. It was a recipe for disaster from the start. As I see it, either we aim for a Catholic state or we aim for the catacombs. There is no sustainable middle ground when engaging the world. Sometimes I think if VII never happened the world would be a completely different place.

    • I wholeheartedly agree, Irenaeus.

I also think if the Church would react and decide to go back to the thinking pre V II, the world would be a completely different place in a generation, or less.

  2. Both of you echo my thoughts of the past few days: the chicken of the false teaching on Religious Liberty is now coming home to roost.

Who will see it though, other than the Traditionalists?
