“Stomp On Jesus”, The New Frontier In Higher Education

rubens

“Have the students write the name JESUS in big letters on a piece of paper,” the lesson reads. “Ask the students to stand up and put the paper on the floor in front of them with the name facing up. Ask the students to think about it for a moment. After a brief period of silence instruct them to step on the paper. Most will hesitate. Ask why they can’t step on the paper. Discuss the importance of symbols in culture”.

This is not a joke, but what has happened in a university in Florida. Apart from the fact that the “assignment” reminds one of kindergarten exercises (without the blasphemy) one truly wonders what goes in the twisted minds of certain people.

I will not spare you the very easy, but very true remark that the genius who thought this did not consider using, say, a Mohammed Cartoon as stomping material. I am sure he knows why. A shame, really, because if one wants to “discuss the importance of symbols in culture” I can barely imagine a more fitting starting point.

Still, the problem here is much vaster than stupidity. This episode shows not only a total lack of Christian feeling, but also the complete absence of every regard for Christianity as a religion. In a Christian country like the United States, this is an obvious indication of a degree of Anti-Christian militancy speaking volumes about the degree of “inclusiveness” and “tolerance” of the blaspheming classes.

The University has apologised, after the fact. The question remains what kind of University it is that employs geniuses like the one who thought this. Personally, I also wonder what kind of kindergarten is this, where people cannot start a discussion about “the importance of symbols in culture” without stomping like little children.

If this is the level of higher education in the United States, decline and fall cannot be very far away.

  1. I am reminded of the scene in C S Lewis’ That Hideous Strength, when the protagonist is instructed to trample on and defile a crucifix – in the name of ‘objectivity’ allegedly, but really with a more diabolical intent.

  2. Disgusting. This is the way it’s been going for a good century – the New Philosophy of men like Kant and Sartre, the new theology (nouvelle theologie) of men like Balthasar and de Lubac [that is, Modernism and heresy], the new society, if you like, modern men are quite, quite mad.

St Thomas Aquinas, Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange, the manuals, on a level intended for the laity (a small digression, I think I might have a vocation, this is one of a very few blogs I read so your prayers would be very welcome), the old Catechisms like Baltimore are often quite hard going but they make sense. The New Theology (what little, God forgive me, I read of it before I went ‘traddie’!)) is gibberish and heretical gibberish at that.

That in fact seems to be the Modernist goal – nonsense. Modern philosophy – let’s say Kant, my RE teacher at school tried to induce me to swallow some – is nonsense if you look at it straight on and with clear eyes, but so many people think it’s ‘philosophy’ or ‘advanced theology’ so it must be good.

It’s the same attitude we got after the Council, arrogance, with ‘periti’ lecturing the Princes of the Church and ‘liturgists’ with their ‘liturgical piety’ and ‘active participation’, ridiculing the devotional and pious practices of countless Catholics – such as rosaries, Stations of the Cross, Adoration and Benediction, the beautiful little prayer books that used to be brought to Mass, the beautiful ‘art de Saint-Sulpice’, reparations, offerings and chaplets – , declaring the beautiful ceremonial and ritual of the Mass to be worthless declaring the doctrines of the Faith (Hell, Purgatory, relics, miracles and so on) to be worthless and anyone who tried to fight them destroying the Faith as ‘out of step with the times’,

Beware ye of any ‘conservative’ prelate as it’s very likely he’s rotten right through with Balthasarian-Lubacian-Rahnerian ‘New Theology’, that is, Modernism. As for a modern day academic, if you can get to the door, run and don’t look back!

  3. The parents ought to stomp the teacher!

  4. Stupidity and insensitivity – Id guess near zero.Anti Christian , 99% at a guess.
US universities produce perhaps 90% of the worlds top scientists, a very high proportion of its best medics and engineers and technologists – the rest -THEY have been taking over since way back when -is probably no worse than European universites, , but far better funded , staff command massive salaries, and indoctrinating a higher proprtion of the brighter youngsters in society “…/…obvious indication of a degree of Anti-Christian militancy speaking volumes about the degree of “inclusiveness” and “tolerance” of the blaspheming Classes”…/..you say, and need have said no more.
What do our cousin commentors say?
