Let Us Not Get Accustomed

I do not know you, but I have the impression the current Bishop of Rome is of the opinion if he behaves like a lunatic for long enough the world will end up thinking that lunacy is the new normality, as least as far as Popes are concerned.

I refuse to judge (I use this world on purpose: as an intelligent being, I am not exempt from the duty of forming a judgment concerning what I see around me) this Pope any differently than I would any Pope of the past.

Therefore, I will continue to be scandalised every time Francis gives scandal or does something very stupid; and if he does it every week, then I will complain and, yes, “judge” every week.

This Papacy – and if we are unlucky, those who will follow it – might reach unimagined lows yet, and it has already reached lows unimaginable eight months ago. But this does not mean we must ignore or downplay Francis' antics by simply saying “oh well, you know how he is…”.

Wrong is wrong even if the wrong is repeated every week, and scandal is scandal even if less grave than the scandal of last week, or of the next one.

Let us not get accustomed.

  1. Dear Mundabor, I have been having problems to comment with my google id, but I think it’s working again now, as for the red nose.. sadly I am not shocked, this is the kind of disgusting, crude vulgarity that here in Southamerica is as normal as the air or the sun, some days ago the so called gay pride parade was celebrated in Buenos aires and many perverts had banners with the picture of Bergoglio and phrases like “thanks for support us” or “Thanks for your message of equality”… disgusting, utterly disgusting!

  2. “Whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.”

  3. Judging? In the 1980s, the high-priest of political correctness on U.S. tv was talk-show-host Phil Donahue (also a supposed Catholic, btw). His most used phrase was “far be it from me to ever make a moral judgment about anybody”. Francis does nothing that hasn’t been a part of liberal thought and popular culture for many years. He’s just a parrot, he creates nothing.

As always with political-correctness, the double standard is the rule. So, e.g., Phil Donahue would defend the endless women guests who were strippers and topless dancers, while vilifying the men customers (“beer-belly slobs”) that would sit in bars ogling them. So too it shall be with Francis – the firing of the radio hosts was just the beginning. It remains to be seen whether he does it openly and honestly, or through henchmen while disclaiming responsibility.

  4. I am struck by the contrast of the following with what has been promoted in word and action by the Holy Father. The only people who would not be scandalized by it must be those who do not know what the Catholic Church has always believed and taught.

“The first part (of the preparation) should be employed in casting off the spirit of the world which is contrary to that of Jesus Christ. The spirit of the world consists essentially in the denial of the supreme dominion of God; a denial which is manifested in practice by sin and disobedience; thus it is principally opposed to the spirit of Christ, which is also that of Mary…. It manifests itself by the concupiscence of the flesh, by the concupiscence of the eyes and by the pride of life, by disobedience to God’s laws and the abuse of created things. Its works are: sin in all forms, then all else by which the devil leads to sin; works which bring error and darkness to the mind, and seduction and corruption to the will. Its pomps are the splendor and the charms employed by the devil to render sin alluring in persons, places and things.” St. Louis Marie de Montfort, Preparation for Consecration
