My observations about the title “Monsignor” being conferred in the US is that yes, it is conferred on young men who are on the fast track to become bishops (some are scary!) but the title is also given to mature men who are doing a great job at something but are perhaps a bit too orthodox for their own good and need to be honored and swiftly made ’emeritus’ from whatever they were doing too well. One such Good Monsignor commented that the biblical evidence for Monsignor is Jesus calling the Apostles to” Come aside and rest awhile.”

    • I wouldn’t insist on the biblical evidence, which I frankly cannot recognise.
      But in general the motto applies that abusus not tollit usum.
