The Lockdown That Isn’t One

The situation in Italy as I write this blog post is this one. You can obviously follow the link for updates.

The news this morning seem apocalyptic for those living abroad. perhaps some explanations are in order.

Having the whole Country on lockdown does not mean that everyone is physically quarantined. It means, in a word, that everyone must self-quarantine unless he has valid reasons to move. These are, for example, going to work, visiting relatives who need assistance, going to the hospital, buying groceries.

He who has such necessity to move can print or copy on a piece of paper the self-certification that he needs to move for this or that reason. If stopped by the Carabinieri or Polizia, he will show his self-certification and say to the law enforcement officers, say, where exactly he is going. The LEO can check at any time. The self-certification means a criminal offence (three months in jail) if the information is not truthful or the person is riding the system.

I miss the information about how exactly many day-to-day situations will be dealt with. However, I think that whilst it is not paralysis (offices will keep going, transports will keep going) it is, I think, pretty much the end of those sectors of the economy that depends on recreational activities, from restaurants to football (soccer) games. The football (soccer) championship has been suspended, no doubt many other sport activities will suffer the same destiny.

I am not a doctor. I understand the Government is trying to do what they can whilst trying to remain sensible and within the legal framework of a free country. However, as a layman I ask myself this: with millions of people still moving around (as it is, in fact, unavoidable) how can anyone think that the virus will be seriously hampered? If, say, ten million Italians go to work every day instead of twenty (many people can work from home, I have several friends in Italy who are working from home with no massive disruption), how does this exactly impair the ability of the virus to spread? Does it make such a big difference that people can’t go to the stadium on the weekend? As a layman, I frankly doubt it.

Plus, there is a nagging doubt in my mind; which. again. comes from life experience.

In situations like this, the temptation for every Government is to follow the stupidity of their own voters, and take drastic measures not because they are of any real use, but because the Government does not want to be accused of inaction or of listening to the “evil Capitalists”.  The entire West is now accustomed to living in a climate of permanenet, extremely stupid low-flame hysteria due to so-called man-made global warming. Why would I think that Governments which even adopt stupid measures to prevent imaginary dangers, and who do that to pander to the stupidity of their own voters, will not adopt even stupider measures when the danger is real?

This is something I cannot avoid thinking, when reading of a nationwide lockdown that isn’t one. In a way I am not blaming the Government as such. I blame populations who have lost the ability to separate real dangers from fake one, and who are therefore prone to adopt or support wrong measures in the case of real dangers because of the massive hysteria that dominates their lives anyway.

I also miss realistic comparison with other events, say: average age and daily numbers of people who died of the common flu in the same period. So for example: in the last 24 hours, 500 people died in Italy of Coronavirus (we aren’t there yet, I this we will be soon), of average age X (it’s very high last time I looked: 81, so the dead seem to be what is called the “harvesting effect” of some diseases), compared with so and so many of such and such average age for the flu. It would, I think, help people to put things in perspective, instead of only reading the latest shouted headline and a dead count constantly rising without any sensible coordinates.

However serious this virus is (it is serious; but it is no Ebola, and no Black Plague), in the end we are in the hands of the Lord. One can only behave responsibly, go to confession and know that, if his time has come, it is because… his time has come.

The day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night. It was so yesterday, it is so now, it will be so forever. Be reasonable, pray for the living and the dead, and carry on.

  1. What we have here is very worrying. The Corona virus is a horrible flu strain that doesn’t have a vaccination at present. Amongst the relatively small statistics of contagion and deaths there is a pan-info-demic explosion of virulent media attention. People demonstrating the most hedonistic and narcissistic behaviour, are panic buying and storing groceries and hygiene products to the rafters. Governments are adding fuel to the fire with their COBRA meetings and worse case scenarios. Business are going bust and the market runs no doubt making very rich billionaires, richer Italy is in lockdown. It is a criminal offence to go about your daily life freely. If you are not able to show the police that you have a legitimate reason to go about your life you are arrested and can face jail time. This is a Police State action and totalitarian. This about mass control; a left wing, globalist dream to control the population? And why? because a very small number of the worlds 7billion population or the 60million in Italy have a virulent strain of flu that came from China. Was there this hype and panic with the Asian flu, back in the 1950s that killed nearly 4,000 people in the UK and 67,000 in the USA. My mother caught this when I was 8. In 1968 the Hong Kong flu killed caused four million deaths world wide. Good hygiene and common sense is sufficient to limit this virus until it disappears or a vaccine is found. And yes. How many people have died from other strains of flu over the last few years in the UK. 2018 saw a death rate of approximately 40,000 people due to a very cold winter and pneumonia. Was there a panic that could shut down the nations ability to function?
Let’s face it,we live in a faithless generation that do not have confidence in Divine Providence. Instead there is a terrifying fear of death because life has little meaning without the understanding of the mercy and love of Christ. I sadly think, it is a punishment the world richly deserves. Our lady of Good Remedy and Good Success, intercede for us.

  2. This comparison of the virus in Korea with the outbreak in Italy might answer some of your questions. The difference seems to be aggressive testing. Korea is trying hard by testing to find out who has the virus, while Italy is not, so an imposed isolation of sorts is the next best way to find out who of the asymptomatic people get sick and keep people from spreading the virus to others when they appear to be well. Confined and/or crowded spaces are the worst places for spreading the virus. This is a very good website for medical explanations and tracking the progression of the virus:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mm7UrZeu-74

  3. Leo D. D. Lion

From a Bishop in France, who refuses to restrict activities in his diocese because of carona virus:
(note annual mortality from alcohol and smoking and more)

Bishop Refuses to Participate in Coronavirus Hysteria
More than the coronavirus epidemic, we have to fear the epidemic of fear, Monsignor Pascal Roland, the bishop of Belley-Ars, France, wrote to his faithful. The parish of the saint Curé d’Ars is part of his diocese. Roland refuses to give in to collective panic and to submit to the precautionary principle that moves civil institutions. Quote, “I do not intend, therefore, to issue any particular instructions for my diocese.”
    Remember the Plague
Roland recalls the much more serious situations of the great plagues when the sanitary means were not those of today. Then, the Christians distinguished themselves through collective prayer, as well as by helping the sick. They neither turned away from God nor shunned their fellow human beings.
    Losing God Makes Fearful
Today’s collective panic reveals our distorted relationship with death and shows the anxiety-provoking effects of the loss of God, the bishop explains. We pretend to master everything, and we hide the fact that we are not the masters of life.
    We Are Living a Lie
For Roland, we have lost our minds and are “living a lie.” Quote, “Why suddenly focus our attention on the coronavirus alone? Why hide the fact that every year in France, the banal seasonal flu affects between 2 to 6 million people and causes about 8,000 deaths? We also seem to have removed from our collective memory the fact that alcohol kills 41,000 people per year, while an estimated 73,000 dead are attributed to tobacco.”
A Church Is Not a Place of Risk
Bishop Roland refuses to prescribe the closing of churches, the suppression of Masses, the abandonment of the sign of peace, the imposition of this or that mode of receiving communion reputed to be more hygienic. For him, a church is not a place of risk, but a place of salvation.
A Christian Does Not Fear Death
Should we barricade ourselves in our homes and stockpile to prepare for a siege? Roland says: No! For a Christian does not fear death. He recalls Christ’s teaching: “Whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and for the sake of the Gospel will save it” (Mark 8:35). “Let us not be the living dead!” Roland writes.

  4. Mundy,
It seems like only yesterday that the godless leftist free mason ruling cabinet of Italy voted to arrest and prosecute the great Salvini. Salvini wanted to follow the immigration laws of Italy but somehow in Italy if the Interior Minister interdicts rogue human traffickers of third world illegal aliens the Interior Minister gets arrested and the captain of the ship gets a medal from the idiots ruling Italy. George Soros etc with the cooperation of his vassals among the paid off Italian politicians is flooding Italy with unvetted third world mendicants carrying many diseases that has Italian medicine baffled. Instead of turning to their Catholic faith in humility as did Italians during the reign of Pope Gregory the Great and holding a rogation procession asking for mercy from the font of mercy Our Lord Jesus Christ the idiots ruling Italy make it a crime to go to Holy Mass. Will all the derelicts and vagrants that pollute the streets of Italian cities be removed by the cops? And if yes then why haven’t the cops done that decades ago instead of forcing working people to navigate a minefields of druggies in order to go to their jobs. Please the Italian government and the police deserve a lot of blame in this matter and many others.

  5. Heard in the news that there are Chinese sweat shops in Italy. Could this be true?
