You might be tempted to think, in the horrible situation in which we are living, that we can still relax thinking that Francis will pass like everything else, and normal service will be resumed when the man kicks the bucket.
Allow me to disagree.
Francis will not be a parenthesis in the history of the Papacy. He will be remembered in centuries to come, and will be taken by theologians as example of horribly wrong Papacy until Doomsday and, I would say, beyond.
Granted, his Papacy might not be long. However, earthquakes do not take very long, either, and duration is a bad way to measure a Pontificate. Alexander VI’s wasn’t such a very long papacy (though it was long enough for the times); on the other hand, the almost legendary Sixtus V was Pope for around five years only, but what a deep impression he left…
Francis could (God pleasing) die today, and the damage he has already done would still be incalculable. He could, however, go on reigning, and do much worse still (think only of the appointment of Cardinals and Bishops). You can say that Hiroshima was a parenthesis in the great scheme of things, but it was still Hiroshima.
Francis is not even Hiroshima. We are witnessing a Papacy whose damage will soon reach (mutatis mutandis) WW I proportions. This is a man going against the Church with a hatred worthy of Diocletian. This is no time to relax.
We must (as bloggers, commenters, journalists) call for the Cardinals and Bishops to rebuke Francis and ask that he resigns. If the Catholic world out there starts to become vocal on this, courageous prelates will have the possibility to take this ball and demands that Francis converts to Catholicism or goes.
The number of heretical statements, and of occasions in which Church teaching has been obviously contradicted, are legion. And whilst some of the worst was said hiding behind the finger of Mr Scalfari (albeit the Pope never condemned any of it), all the off-the-off heresies and all the aeroplane nonsense (from “who am I to Judge?” to Catholics who “don’t have God” because they believe in absolute Truth) has been pronounced by the man’s very mouth, in front of many witnesses. If it’s not formal heresy (I do not think it is) it is in my eyes repeated public scandal, continued sabotage, and persistent open defiance of elementary Catholic teaching.
Yesterday, surfing around the Internet, I had the pleasure of noticing that Condomgate has caused the harshest condemnation yet from several Catholic bloggers. They are not relaxed at all, and very rightly so! Francis will be one day dismissed as Pope Diocletian, but only because good Catholics refuse to relax and defy this madness, not because this huge mess is dismissed as a temporary hiccup, or a pontifical cold.
Francis is clearly attacking Catholicism without any shame now, openly and frontally. Do not treat him as if he were just a temporary embarrassment. Treat him for what he is: an enemy of Christ and His Church.
The obscenity of the last episode of Francismadness, on these pages called “Condomgate”, requires at least an attempt at explanation: how can a man, and a Pope of all people, be so insanely arrogant as to go around spouting heretical madness in ever bigger doses?
My analysis is simple, but I think reality is often explained in simple term.
Francis started his disgraceful pontificate on a roll. The mass media loved him as a form of new entertainment, and milked this particular Argentinian cow for all it was worth. With the time the novelty wore out, and Francis saw himself treated more and more as useful background liberal noise than as the new Apostle of Humbleness. At the same time, the reaction of the Catholic world began to take shape.
A first Synod failed to make of this Pope the Great Revolutionary. He reacted angrily, but thought he would get everyone aligned in the second. He also embarked in an environ-mental crusade, again designed to show the symphaty for secular issues of a deeply secular man. An astonishingly stupid Encyclical followed. The Catholic world laughed at him very publicly. The Encyclical probably marks the points where the thinking part of the Catholic masses realised they had a huge problem.
Francis made a second attempt with the 2015 Synod. He failed again, and this time his rage was barely contained. He has since reacted with a series of angry statements against everything and everyone Catholic, even as the most acidic, petulant bully in recent Papal history launched the “year of (false) mercy”. The criticism to Catholics clearly backfired, but Francis was more angered still. He reacted with even more poison, now in a shameless, open fight against his enemies: Catholics and Catholicism.
The man sees the game going out of his control, and the only way he can react is by spinning out of control himself. He has become a Mark Shea on steroids, but Shea at least represents only himself. And it's not working, it's not working! But the man is too arrogant to see that he is digging his own grave and covering his papacy in bovine excrements for all centuries to come. Too arrogant, too ignorant, too boorish, too obviously incompetent, and too obviously stupid is this lewd old man. He just doesn't get it. This is why he keeps digging an even bigger hole, with an angry old man inside.
His own bishops and cardinals gently, but unmistakeably warn him of the consequences of going too far, and have letters of warning leaked for all the world to see. Cahiers de doléances go around the Vatican, and at least their existence is also leaked. Vaticanists tweet sources high in the Vatican defining him a grave danger for the Faith. What kind of stern warnings he received in private from his own people we can only imagine. They must have been very credible, then this one here is such a megalomaniac idiot, that without a credible threat he could proclaim himself the Second Christ. Hey, he is already at “my Church”. Stupid beyond belief.
Francis is now like a South American dictator reacting to high inflation with more money printing, and to economic crisis with more populism. He knows his own Cardinals and Bishops can stop him, not in his daily rants perhaps, but certainly in the worst of his revolutionary plans. He will go down in history as the biggest potty mouth the papacy ever had, and possibly the lightest brain. The man is angry, and frustrated. He reacts like a stupid bully would: more insults, and more attacks. More ridicule follows, and then more attacks. This is the dynamics we see at play now. Can't wait for the bouncer language in front of the cameras.
Intelligent men would understand the scale of the trouble and adapt to the circumstances; accepting, albeit obtorto collo, that the Great FrancisRevolution is just not going to happen, and living with it as reasonable, if evil, people do. But Francis is not intelligent, and if he had been he would not have come to this point in the first place. He is a South American dictator angry at the army for abandoning him, and too stupid to seek accommodation. He is a stupid old ass kicking around in rage, because no sane person wants to listen to his braying. And he has lost face now, it is difficult to think how he can ever repair his image of secular, proto-communist, vulgar, envious, godless, stupid, angry nutcase.
Never did we have a Pope like this one. Thank God, with his antics he now loses supporters every day.
Will he understand? At this point, I doubt.
What are Catholics to do?
They must constantly encourage the Catholic hierarchy to publicly rebuke this man, put his heresies to shame and invite him to resign.
The cry for Francis' resignation should rise from countless blogs, and become matter of common knowledge. When the mass media pick it up, Francis' papacy will be six feet under whether he really resigns or not.
The man should be made to go. He must be shamed so insistently and so publicly that an orderly retreat in some faggot-plagued Jesuit seminary – provided they still exist; the seminaries, I mean, of course the Jesuit faggots do – appears the better alternative to clinging to a papacy in shame, waiting to die as the Catholic world mocks him.
Start drumming, and keep drumming. The man has to go. At some point, the drumming will become deafening, and this papacy will be torn to shreds. This obscene circus has gone on for long enough, and it is now time for orthodox Catholics to stand up and ask from their clergy that they do what is in their power to put an end to it.
It seems that aeroplanes have a strange effect on Pope Francis. Every time he is over there in the skies, he gets even more heretical than his usual self.
I do not know where to start. The obvious sabotage of Catholic doctrine on contraception is alone worth of good Cardinals asking him to put an end to this scandal and resign already. But it is not only that. In everything he says, the man talks like your anticlerical bastard down the road, and employs all the trite nonsense they use.
And no, we must wish for the end of every false religion. And no, the fact that Christians also commits bad acts does not mean that we are not a religion above every other, and the only true one. And no, this argument of calling the mistakes of the one to justify the existence of a false religion is pure evil. And no, being a fundamentalist does not mean not to have God. Every catholic is, must be a fundamentalist, because he must recognise in Catholicism the fundamental value and funding reality of his existence. The one without God is this evil ass.
Francis spouts an impressive collections of insults to Catholicism in one flight. But in this list of atrocities, the condom one is probably the worst, because so openly proclaimed. It is more than an off-the-cuff observation. It is a programmatic statement. As long as there is an imagined environ-mental emergency, the man will not care for contraception. Actually, he calls contraception “one method of prevention”. Of what: Catholicism? Shall I quote the Presbyterian Ronald Reagan to him? It is not about telling how to do it; it is about telling not to do it!
Please, Lord, get us rid of him, now!
This man sabotages Catholicism at every step. A very stupid notion of enviro-social-justice is his religion. He does not have any other.
It is high time that Bishops and Cardinals who care for the Church ask him to put an end to this and resign, or be held accountable for his betrayal of Catholicism. never have we had a Pope like this one. This here is pure evil.
It is time to expunge this cancer from the body of the Church. Popes can resign, and Popes can be made to resign. There is no need for them to proclaim a false dogma, or to be formal heretics. Francis should be asked to resign because he is a shame for the Church, and unworthy of the habit. And he should be asked so insistently, until it becomes known to the last Daily Mail-reading housewife that he is a shame for the Church, and an enemy of Christ.
This is truly enough.
Che Guevara would manage to be a better Pope than this clown.
From Domine, Da Mihi Hanc Aquam an interesting observation (mentioned also by others) about the IPhone application meant to prepare one for confession.
Typically, the worst part of the press has not lost the occasion to be misleading and superficial, possibly engendering in the most acutely lapsed Catholics the idea that it be now possible to, so to speak, self-confess and self-absolve oneself with the help of an iPhone application.
Of course, the readers of this blog very well know how things stand. But it might be useful to be vigilant and decidedly refute every opinion set in circulation by the uninformed. It might be even better to try to casually throw the app in as preparation to confession, just to have a good thing mentioned… 😉
If we remember the confusion generated by Pope Benedict’s careless words about condoms, we have the idea of what damage can be created among the very many for whom Catholicism is only as a distant voice, and who will receive Catholicism as a distant and often distorted echo. They shouldn’t be neglected and the effort to have as many doctrinal points as possible right among the majority of the general public is, in my eyes, essential if we want these lost sheep to come back to the fold.
If you go here at around 2:10:00 (make haste, because it might disappear in the next days) you’ll have a good example of what doesn’t work with the Church in England.
The BBC journalist insists in posing irritating, but actually very fitting questions to Archbishop Longley. Thankfully, the journalist has got it that the Pope was, during Condomgate, “not saying anything terribly new” and he therefore asks – understandably, from his ungodly perspective – whether the Church is going to “change” Her opinion about condoms and, more fittingly, whether the average English Catholics accepts “lock, stock and barrel” the Catholic doctrine.
This would be an ideal occasion to launch oneself on a passionate defence of Truth, on BBC’s “Today” programme, on Christmas Eve. Which is, I was told, what an Archbishop is supposed to do anyway.
Instead, Archbishop Langley’s answers oscillate between the inane, the cowardly and the pathetic. He goes on and on remembering the success of the Papal visit; talks about how much the church is looking for “dialogue”; insists on Cardinal Newman in a way clearly meant to avoid the show of “tough love” required of him; tries not to answer the journalist’s questions and even says that he thinks that Catholics in England accept “lock, stock and barrel” the Catholic teaching, “otherwise they wouldn’t be Catholic”. Good Lord; do we live on the same planet….
The buzz words, though, are all there. Dialogue is obviously there and change is also felt as appropriate. “The Church is constantly changing”, says he when he talks of the ways the Church talks to the people. This is meant to sound positive, I suppose, but the guts to say loud and clear that the Truth doesn’t change and everyone must come to terms with that is clearly more than he can muster. So we have on the one side the hurt feeling of perverts – explicitly and emphatically championed by the Beeb man – and on the other hand we have a man insisting with you that the Church “changes” because now the Pope talks to you on the radio. Brilliant.
Archbishop Longley (not one of the worst, for sure; for the English standard, I mean) has given a wonderful example of why the Church struggles in this country: because it is afraid to say it straight and prefers to hide behind successful visits, blessed Cardinals and easy slogans of “dialogue” and “change” instead.
You can read on Rorate Coeli (you’ll have to scroll down to the 21st December) the Note of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith “on trivialization of sexuality” (American spelling, apparently. Fair enough…).
This is nothing less than an official statement about Condomgate. If you take the few minutes to read it, you’ll notice that the arguments it makes are not in the least different from the comment made on this and other orthodox blogs at the time of the controversy.
What one notices is that at least here in the UK the media have chosen to completely ignore this statement in the same way as they had – once it became clear that they had once again pissed outside of the pan – conveniently decided to move to other topics.
As a result the truth didn’t get one hundredth of the media attention given to the lie and untold non-churchgoer Catholics must be somewhat under the impression that after all the Church can change Her teaching and therefore, well, must change it in order to become, ehem, more similar to them.
This is further prove that the media landscape of this country – largely dominated by champagne liberals, liberals who can’t afford the champagne and socialists who think they’re liberals – is not interested in information, but in manipulation of the (license-paying) public.
This repeats what I have already written about the “Osservatore Romano”. With rather more incisive words.
Interestingly, Voris also says that the blunder might not be due to teenager-like desire of being a modern/hip/cool, but that it might have been the result of a desire to weaken the Faith. Basically, either utter incompetence or utter bad faith.
One must not agree but, seen the precedents with the Beatles and Homer Simpson, the suspicion is not unjustified.
Strong stuff on the whole. Well Done, Mr. Voris!
