Tut-Tut, Pontiff Emeritus!

Yes, I miss him…

“Giovanni Paolo II non chiedeva applausi, né si è mai guardato intorno preoccupato di come le sue decisioni sarebbero state accolte. Egli ha agito a partire dalla sua fede e dalle sue convinzioni ed era pronto anche a subire dei colpi. Il coraggio della verità è ai miei occhi un criterio di prim’ordine della santità”

“John Paul II did not ask for applause, nor did he ever look around worried about how his decisions would be received. He acted from the starting point of his faith and convictions, and he was also ready to take blows. The courage of truth is to my eyes a very important criterium of holiness.” (translation and emphasis mine).

Pontiff Emeritus Benedict XVI

Shockingly uncharitable, this criticism.

How does he dare…

I am appalled.

Appalled!

  1. Harsh criticism indeed. Voris must be beside himself.

  2. You need a German mind-set to interpret Benedict’s words.
I know exactly what he meant, because I’m German, too.

I shall dismiss your interpretation this time in favour to keep the peace.

    God bless you

    • Thanks. Dismiss away.
I have lived in Germany many years but by all means, take the high ground. It helps to keep the peace. yeah, there must be a hidden meaning in clear words open only to Germans.

  3. Each Italian, French and US commenters have understood these sentences like you, Mundabor. But, natuerlich, they are not Germans.
I have a so great ” nostalgia” for Benedict’s clear way of speaking, even in a foreign language !

  4. What an “interesting” claim that one needs “a German mind-set to interpret Benedict’s words” spoken in Italian. The meaning couldn’t be clearer, even in Mundabor’s English translation.
Is this going to be a new trend: explaining how Francis’s words don’t really mean what he says, but are orthodox; then explaining how Benedict XVI isn’t really saying what he obviously is because it might be critical of his papal successor?

    • Yes, I think it’s the new Catholic Gnosticism.
The meaning of the words is accessible only to some Very Special People who have that Very Special Cultural Framework.
      Funny, really…

  5. Mundabor, your post made me check the Net, where I found the following article, which includes your post’s quotation as well as Benedict XVI’s criticism of liberation theology: http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/in-rare-interview-benedict-xvi-recalls-life-john-paul-ii/

  6. John Paul II did not ask for applause

Is it April Fool’s Day already?
